    Baiju Parthan

“Fortunately or unfortunately, all of my figures try to fly. I have always been interested in gravity and the metaphors in the language of gravity. We fall from grace, we fall in love, gravity is consistently there.”

Baiju Parthan’s artworks highlight a maximalist approach, layering the canvas and medium with many composite forms of seen and routine objects. Although they feel relevant, the meanings may need a deeper probe in his life and consistent method. Baiju’s expressions comprise paintings, sculptures, digital art and installations

Born 1956 in Kerala, Baiju’s influences range from literature to spirituality, history to mythology, popular culture to classical and many more that he experiments with new digital technology. Having trained in painting from Goa College of Art, Baiju did not confine himself to academic conventions. Instead, he has persistently walked beyond the boundaries of expression through the utility of myriad materials. Baiju claims Sartre’s Age of Reason as a seminal impact, which spearheaded his thinking process.

Despite studying Indian mystic, ritual, tantra, mythology and philosophy, Baiju has been equally appealed by western artists like Joan Miro, Larry Rivers, and Cubist painters. Interestingly, Baiju has been aware of his changing thought processes. Hence, the shifts in his artistic expression result from his knowledge of postmodern theory and individual reality. The flux that we and our world lives in has become the permanent gist of his artworks. His discourse largely transfers from modern to contemporary to postcolonial, cultivating a distinct identity of himself.

While appreciating Leonardo da Vinci’s assorted expertise in science, art and literature, Baiju also shows his respected appreciation towards KCS Panicker, with whom he relates his creative exercise. Baiju has exhibited at many national and international art galleries while having been collected by several reputed collectors.
